Self Build Garden Studios

Many people looking to buy a garden studio are up for the challenge of building it themselves, and whilst there are dozens of garden studio suppliers in the UK there are only a few that offer their designs as self build packages.

Self Build Garden Studios are exactly what their name says, modern fully insulated garden studios that you build yourself and the studio has been designed to be well within the capabilities of a competent DIY’er.

Self Build Garden Studios offer two standard size garden studio models, the rectangular 2.4m x 3.6m (8ft x 12ft) size and the larger, square 3.6m x 3.6m (12ft x 12ft) both creating good, useable space garden studios.

The Self Build Garden Studios range has a contemporary feel and features many of the design elements found in turnkey garden studio designs such as large expanses of double glazed doors and windows.

The Self Build Garden Studio range has been designed to fit in with planning permission permitted development rules; this means unless you live in a Listed Building, a National Park, The Broads, a World Heritage site or an Area of Outstanding Beauty you won’t need planning permission to install this garden studio.

The gallery below shows a Self Build Garden Studio build process and it looks a straight forward system.

These garden studios require a firm level base such as a concrete slab or concrete set paving slabs, onto which a clever steel grid work frame is positioned, the frames bolt together and are levelled by adjusting the bolt on the feet of the frame.

The floor and walls are made up of structural insulated panels (SIP’s) which easily interlock to create a tight joint. The fully insulated wall structure is 151mm thick overall and incorporates pressure treated cladding on the exterior and a white internal wall finish. The standard roof covering is interlocking, insulated structural steel sheeting which is easy to install. The doors and windows are double glazed UPVC and come pre hung for easy installation.

Self Build Garden Studios offer a number of upgrade options and they are clearly priced on their website so you know how much the project is going to cost. Upgrades include Western Red Cedar cladding, additional windows, laminate flooring and bifold doors.

The standard package does not include electrics so the optional electrical package is a must to make full use of your garden studio, like any garden studio installation you will need to get a qualified electrician to connect the garden studios electrics to the mains supply.

It’s always very satisfying to look back at a garden studio you have just built, so if you are up for the challenge Self Build Garden Studios are offering a good product. The standard specification garden studios cost £4,965 plus VAT for the 2.4m x 3.6m model and £5,933 plus VAT for the 3.6m x 3.6m so significant savings can be made building the studios yourself.

Self build studios take 2-3 days to build by a competent DIY’er with the help of one or two other people and Self Build Garden Studios offer a telephone support line, how many other types of extension  can be built in a weekend?!

Self Build Garden Studios have a display studio in Baildon, West Yorkshire if you would like to experience the feel of a garden studio before you buy; their website details the standard specification along with clear pricing for the optional extras.
