More and more families are realising that an annexe in the garden is a great way to support older relatives, yet maintain their valuable independence. A granny annexe / micro home can be a practical, yet stylish solution as this recent Green Studios build shows.
Sitting on a footprint of 7m x 5m, creating a footprint of 35 square meters this not a huge annexe, but provides a multifunctional living space with well equipped kitchen and shower room.
The customer approached Green Studios with a specific brief. He wanted to create a self-contained building for his elderly mother to live in. As space that would be easy to clean and maintain. It was also essential that the space was light and airy and that the space available could be well utilised.
Green Studios designed a contemporary, cubist design which features large sections of glazing to flood the room with light. We like how Green Studios have designed-in a single door for general access and then a set of sliding doors in the living area which open up onto a deck area – a clever way of extending the living space.
The main living space has been cleverly zoned. There is a well equipped kitchen area with room for a table. A sitting area with room for two sofas and then the bedroom area. This is perhaps the cleverest use of space. As set of fitted units conceal a wall bed which pulls down to instantly transform the room into a comfortable bedroom.

A wall bed like this is quite a load on the walls so Green Studios used Fermacell boards instead of regular plasterboard in the annexe. Fermacell is a denser, stronger board than regular plasterboard and means that heavy elements can be fixed into it with confidence.
The annexe has a full size shower room. Green studios organised the connection of the services to the mains supply for sewage, water and electricity.
The annexe will be a comfortable space to live in all year round thanks to the high levels of insulation and the fitting of a Fujitsu air conditioning unit. This means the owner can maintain a comfortable temperature all year round. To ensure the clean lines of the building weren’t compromised by the pipes for the air conditioning system. Green Studios boxed them in so that they match in with the external cladding.
As with all granny annexe buildings this build fully complies with Building Regulations meaning that it has the same thermal and structural integrity of a new build house.
Green Studios are experienced in building this type of garden home, we recently featured a fine example of home they built for a lady looking to downsize.
