Heading into their fifth year in business, 3rdSpace partners Ben Couture and Paul Grindley take a look back at 2014, and reveal plans for what’s in store for the New Year ahead.
2014 has been a great year for 3rdSpace, and given us opportunity to work with some very interesting people. It’s really been a year of firsts; we had our first project in the North East (for digital type foundry The Northern Block) and completed the first 5 Bay-sized modular garden room in London – the largest yet. It’s also the year that we finally set up office in our own modular 3rdSpace, which we can say (with no bias) is a very nice space to work in!
The majority of 3rdSpace projects have in fact been in London this year. The fact that our pre-fabricated system can fit through most doorways and offer an extension of living space within just a few days seems to one of the biggest reasons. It offers flexibility to people who like their house and the area they live in, but need an easy solution for more space.
Looking ahead to 2015, we have a couple of new modular garden rooms in hand already – one of which is currently with the planning department. Our buildings do fall within Permitted Development Rights, however as we have found on a number of projects, there is no hard and fast rule when the garden belongs to a flat. We have a good success rate though; it seems planners appreciate the natural, sustainable timber construction, and that the system is demountable if ever required.
There are a number of new ‘add-on’ components we are working on ready for next year too, from modular interior furniture to external louvered canopies – watch this space. Also, after noticing a growing demand for integrated garden storage, we have designed a new integral ‘shed’ space that discreetly forms part of the 3rdSpace modular kit and can be accessed from outside. We will of course keep you updated with images of these as they come to life.
Wishing everyone at The Garden Room Guide all the best for the New Year, as well as our 3rdSpace customers of past, present and future!
